Ugadi is the time of the traditional New Year. Ugadi marks the beginning of a new Hindu lunar calendar with a change in the moon's orbit.

On the day of Ugadi, mantras are chanted and predictions made for the new year. In early times, the panchangasravanam or listening to the yearly calendar used to take place at the local temples.
