Pope Benedict XVI will today elevate Kerala-born Sister Alphonsa to the status of saint on Sunday. It has to be noted that Sister Alphonsa will become the first Indian woman to achieve the high spiritual position of the Catholic Church.

Siter Alphonsa will be conferred saintahd aong with three other from other parts of the world. The annointment will be held at at a special four-hour long mass and allied ceremonies starting from 12.30 pm IST.

Siter Alphonsa's beatification - that is recognition by the Church of a dead person's accession to heaven - was ordered by the then Pope, Pope John Paul II, when he visited Kerala in the year 1986. Sister Alphonsa was born at Kudamaloor in Kottayam District of Kerala in 1910. She passed away in 1946.
